It wasn’t so long ago that people did work they liked just fine. Work that provided a good paycheck. Work that provided stability. And work where you could sign out and leave at the end of the day.
But in the last decade, something changed.
“The desire for the cool job that you’re passionate about is a particularly modern and bourgeois phenomenon,” as Anne Helen Peterson puts it in her book Can’t Even. “[It’s] elevating a certain type of labor to the point of desirability that workers will tolerate all forms of exploitation for the ‘honor’ of performing it.”
It’s no longer enough to find a good job. Instead, we feel required to find one that will look flashy on your LinkedIn, one that you love, and one that becomes a core part of your identity.
However, this is a slippery slope because...
Do work you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. Ehhhhhhh it's more like, do work you love and you'll never stop working.
As a result, friends, hobbies, and time to unwind dries up. I can attest to that.
So where do we go from here?
May I suggest a small but important mindset shift?
If you’re in a job right now that you love, great! Keep enjoying it. But what if instead of loving it, you learn to just like it.
Aim to simply like it as a mental reminder to prioritize work in your life after things and people you actually love.
Learn to like your work so you’re not blinded by love to the point where you can’t log off.
